GENERAL: Arabic language and literature, Arabic folklore and folk 
literature, Ethnomusicology of the Middle East, Turkic folk literature 
and folklore in Turkey and Central Asia.  MAIN COUNTRIES: Egypt, Algeria, 
Morocco, Oman, Turkey, Central Asia.  TOPICS: oral epic poetry, sirat 
Bani Hilal, ashiklar traditions, Andalusian classical music in Islamic 
Spain and modern North Africa, the history of Arabic autobiography from 
the 9th to the 19th centuries, history of childhood in Islamic culture 
(specifically the Arab Middle East), musical and dance traditions of the 
Suez Canal region particularly Port Said, music traditions of the rabab, 
the simsimiyya, Middle Eastern style violin (kamanja), as well as ud and 
nay/ney.
