Since 1985, I've directed the Documentation Center for Islamic Art and
Architecture at Harvard's Fine Arts Library, documenting the visual
culture of all parts of the Islamic world, supporting instruction
and research in these fields and providing reference services to
local users and visiting scholars.
My own research interests include Ottoman and Safavid history; the study
of manuscript sources and archival documents; the architectural history
of Islamic shrines in Palestine; Islamic art and culture in the Balkans
and Southeastern Europe; the protection of cultural heritage under
national and international law; documenting the destruction of cultural
property during the 1992-1995 war in Bosnia-Herzegovina; aiding the
rebuilding of libraries and the recovery and reconstruction of cultural
heritage in Bosnia; history of libraries and librarianship in the Muslim
world; Ottoman and Turkish cooking and culinary history; Turkish and Turkic
language and literature.
Languages: Modern Turkish, Ottoman Turkish, Chagatay, Azerbaijani,
Persian, Arabic, Hungarian, German, French, Spanish, Italian, Latin,
