Research interests: Assyrian and Babylonian magic, medicine, death customs,
ghosts, popular culture, popular religion, law, military, Akkadian language;
magic, popular culture, women, daily life in the Islamic world

Extensive travels in the Islamic world and the accumulation of a large
slide archive of the Ancient, Medieval and Modern Islamic world, including (as
of 1995) Turkey, Syria, Jordan, Yemen, Egypt (Cairo only), Tunisia, Algeria,
Morocco, Uzbekistan, Chinese Turkestan (Xinjiang), Moslems of China (Hui), and
to a lesser extent Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Greece, Yugoslavia.
