    Modern Islamic history, especially nineteenth- and twentieth- century
[C19/C20] Islam and Sufism (esp. Ahmadiyya, Idrisi tradition,
Naqshabandiyya) often using anthropological approaches. Field work in
Sudan, Egypt, Syria/Lebanon, Malaysia.
    
   Have also worked on political history in Hejaz and Yemen (Asir) from
archival sources.

   Secondary interest in modernity & Islam and in Muslim minorities in
e.g. Singapore, Thailand, Cambodia, and in Islam in Europe and the West
(esp. "Traditionalism" and Rene Guenon)

   Working languages: Arabic, English, French, Spanish and German.
