Modern Arabic Literature of the Levant (particularly) Lebanon and Egypt.
Specialize in 19th Century and early 20th Century Arab Renaissance
(al-Nahdah al-`Arabiyah). My dissertation is a inquiry into the formation
of modern Arab subjectivity during this time, focusing on the works of
Butrus al-Bustani, Salim al-Bustani, and Jurji Zaydan. The dissertation is
theoretically based in post-structuralist theory most notably Lacan and
Derrida as well along with their precursors especially Hegel and Kant., I
also interested in modern Arab and European intellectual history, and the
history of Arab nationalism.
Other interests entails history and literature of Arab minorities
most notably the Maronite community, the history and effects of
colonialism in the Arab and Third world and Liberation movements,
most prominent of which are the Palestinians and Kurds, as well as history
of struggle of the Armenians, Assyrians, and Berbers.
