Description of my work:

I am currently completing my doctoral dissertation entitled "The 'Agayl
('Uqaylat), Camel Trade and the Transformation of the Bedouin Economy in
Northern Arabia, 1850-1950." The work focuses on the 'Agayl camel merchants
who originated in the Qasim region of the Najd, in Saudi Arabia, and examines
their role as intermediaries between the camel-herding bedouin tribes of the
region and the urban camel markets of the Fertile Crescent (Baghdad, Iraq;
Aleppo and Damascus, Syria and Gaza, Palestine) and Egypt. The study
analyzes camel populations, prices and the changes in demand for camels
during a period when large-scale camel caravans came to end and resulted in a
precipitous drop in the demand for camels.

In addition, I have completed a study on the city of Abu Dhabi and am
interested in the history of the Persian Gulf, with emphasis on the United
Arab Emirates.
