Since 1965 I have specialized in the critical analysis of the Qur'an (Koran),
writing the articles on the Qur'an in the ENCYCLOPAEDIA OF ISLAM, 2nd ed, Vol
V, and the DICTIONARY OF THE MIDDLE AGES. In recent years I have worked
mainly on the quest for the historical Muhammad, writing the articles on the
Prophet in the 2nd ed of the ENCYCLOPAEDIA OF ISLAM and the OXFORD
ENCYCLOPEDIA OF THE MODERN ISLAMIC WORLD.

During the 1995-96 academic year I will be a member of the School of
Historical Studies at the Institute for Advanced Studies in Princeton, N.J.,
where I will be writing a biography of the Prophet Muhammad.

My other research and writing interests include: Middle East religions,
comparative religion, hermeneutics, History of Religions,
Religionswissenschaft, scriptural criticism (Jewish, Christian, and Islamic),
early history of Islam, Islamic rituals, and phenomenology of religion.
