     Ph.D. Anthropology Columbia University 1991.

Research in North and West Africa, principally among Twareg
     (Tuareg) pastoral nomads (Algeria--Summer 1974,
Niger--1976-1977 and 1984-1986), mostly in the region of Agadez,
Republic of Niger. Research interests include: pastoralism,
gender relations, ritual, political identity, democratization,
and Afro-Asiatic linguistics. My Ph.D. dissertation concerned
Twareg women's high social status and the practice of
waqf / al habus in establishing independent wealth exclusively
for women, a custom known as akh-idderan, "Living Milk," among
     Twareg pastoral nomads.

Recent research included organizing an international conference
on the Twareg insurrection in the Sahara and the problems of
     democratization in Niger and Mali.

Currently completing revisions on my dissertation manuscript for
publication. See photographic article on Twareg women's ritual
wrestling in Natural History magazine, November 1992. Other
     articles available upon request.
