description of work:

I am currently undertaking Phd research in the disciplines of Anthropology
and Women's Studies. My dissertation explores issues to do with gender,
identity, activism and development in south India. I conducted my fieldwork
amongst a group of uneducated, rural women involved in activism and
development in the Nellore District of Andhra Pradesh from 1994-1995. This
covers the period of the state's prominent literacy drive, rural women's
protests against liquor (the Anti-Arrack Movement) and local NGOs' move into
the realm of health provision. I am also interested in Telugu feminist
literature, and local forms of goddess worship.
