description of work:
I am currently at work on a project about Indians in late-Victorian
Britain. I was trained as a British historian at the University of
Chicago with a speciality in British India. I have written a book
(University of North Carolina Press, 1994) called "Burdens of History:
British Feminists, Indian Women and Imperial Culture, 1865-1915," which
historicizes the British women's movement in the context of 19th century
imperial ideologies. I've taught courses in British history, the British
empire, feminist historiography, introduction to women's studies, and
world civilization. I've also written on women in medicine, the
relationship between home and empire in Victorian culture, and the impact
of postcolonialism on metropolitan history and literature.
