description of work:

Present research is on the political economy of development in South Asia
(chiefly India, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka) and Southeast Asia (chiefly
Indonesia).  I'm interested in social institutions, organizations, and
movements, and their varied relationships to states and governments. Areas
of interest include: 

labor, industrial change, and workers' organizations
poverty and social development
trade and labor rights
religious and ethnic conflict
non-governmental organizations
culture, environment, gender, and development

I teach Development Politics and South Asian Politics at UC Berkeley, and
have some facility in Hindi and in Urdu.  I serve as the Development
Officer for the University of California's Pacific Rim Research Program.
