description of work:
My area of interest is mainly British colonialism and its impact on
Bengali theatre in the nineteenth century (which is the subject of my
dissertation). I am also interested in Bengali folk music which includes
the Baul religious tradition and the work of Lalan Fakir. I am a
playwright, director, performer, and filmmaker as well. Currently, I am
finishing a documentary on Suman Chatterjee, the Bengali urban
folk/political singer. Among my theoretical interests are post-colonial
studies, performance theory, diaspora and cultural studies, subaltern
studies and film theory. I am also a translator; my work in this area
includes Shudraka's "The Little Clay Cart" (Sanskrit to English), Tagore's
"Bisarjan" (Bengali to English), short stories by Samaresh Basu and
Akhtharuzzaman Ilyas (Bengali to English), Salman Rushdie and Carlos
Fuentes (English to Bengali), Camilo Jose Cela (Spanish to Bengali), and,
songs of Suman Chatterjee (Bengali to English).
