7.1 RESEARCH
I am working in the field of Environment Geography for the last 15 years
with emphasis on application of remote sensing technique for natural
resources mapping, management and assessment; drought, desertification and
land degradation; indigenous knowledge systems as well as socio-economic
aspects milieu of the Thar desert of India. I strive to find solutions of
the various environmental - social tribulations of the region.
A. DROUGHT, DESERTIFICATION AND LAND DEGRADATION AND APPLICATION OF REMOTE
SENSTING TECHNIIQUE
Dissertation for the award of degree of M.A in Geography entitled IMPACT
OF DROUGHT: A BIOGEOGRAPHICAL STUDY OF SALAWAS VILLAGE is an endeavor to
understand the phenomena of drought and its socio-economic-environmental
web and deep rooted societal livelihood system existing in the Thar
Desert. I have worked-out a simplified version of Thornthwaite's Aridity
Index formula to calculate Drought Intensity, which can be applied to
arid, semi-arid or sub-humid zones equally. This simple methodological
approach is useful in the assessment of meteorological droughts, specially
for Thar Desert and its micro-units.
Ph.D. thesis entitled: IMPACT OF DROUGHT ON DESERTIFICATION PROCESS IN
NORTH-WESTERN RAJASTHN DESERT (BASED ON REMOTE SENSING TECHNIQUE): It is
the only study undertaken to study two important parameters with the
application of Remote sensing technique; one is a natural hazard and
another a man-made phenomena. Factors casing and leading to one another
were identified and mapped. Also interventions of human beings and
introduction of technology aggravating problem was identified. Impact of
drought on the desertification, on the distribution, growth and
development of various natural resources like soils, vegetation, surface
and groundwater and existing landuse patterns occurring under different
landform units were studied. Further, origin and distribution of
indicators of desertification like the erosional, depositional,
salinity/alkalinity and drought hazards were also studied. Also
animal-human and livestock-grazing ground's relationship in accelerating
drought and desertification were also investigated. Suggestions were also
proposed to face this natural and man-made phenomenon together.
PG Diploma in Ecology & Environment thesis: Bio-Geo-Environmental Status
Report of Textile Industrial City of Pali (India). I have surveyed the
neighboring villages and identified various factors causing
land-degradation in the textile industrial city of Pali. This study
offered that over-exploitation of ancient underground water that is mostly
saline and brackish may cause total loss of water resources. Chemical
analysis of a number of water samples showed the extent of surface and
underground water resource pollution. Pollution of land resources was also
mapped. Potential suggestions offered included establishment of effluent
treatment plants in the textile industrial areas.
Post-Graduate dissertation: Appraisal of Biotic & Abiotic Resources in an
Arid Environment through the Application of Remote Sensing Techniques (A
case study of Barmer District). Micro-wave remote sensing has been used
first time to study an arid environment. A successful attempt was made to
assess the accuracy and feasibility of the micro-wave remote sensing for
the appraisal of abiotic & biotic resources of the Thar Desert region. It
was understood that micro-wave sensors provide data to supplement that
information obtainable in the visible and infrared spectrum. It was used
for the crop-identification, drought mapping, water-resources,
hydrological potential zones, detection of lineaments/fractures even
buried under soil or vegetation cover; etc. It was possible to map nadis.
University Grants Commission sponsored project: Impact of Changing pattern
of Landuse/Land cover on the Desert Ecosystem of Rajasthan (A study based
on remote sensing technique of Pokaran Tehsil, Jaisalmer District).
Landuse has been the latest ramification of the fast growing population
and its impact on the exploitation plus pressure on natural resources. The
study had essential ingredients of landuse, i.e. factors, principle,
approaches, landuse classification, agricultural efficiency, crop
combination, land capability, conservation of land and landuse planning.
As the land presents a variegated picture, satellite remote sensing show
anything from isolated hills and mesas to the whole mountain chains. It
was suggested that:
1. Over-exploitation of resources and uneconomic landuse
practices: Uneconomic exploitation of natural resources and land use
practices has been one of the main processes of ecosystem degradation that
has made the region more uninhabitable.
Due to intensive pressure on land and absence of subsidiary occupations
compel the people to cultivate the dunes and marginal lands. This causes
the loosening of sand particles which become susceptible to be carried
away by the winds. These wind borne sands fall on the adjacent fertile
lands and ultimately deteriorate them. Hence the system is a menace of
soil erosion and land degradation hazard. Soil belonging to Lawan,
Ramdeora, Marwa etc series have somewhat better potentiality for
cultivation. Whereas, soils of Dune and Modasar series are prone to wind
erosion. Pokaran series of soil has least capability with high salinity
amd rock outcrops.
2. The landuse of the tehsil is dominated by wastelands
of different kinds. Over-exploitation (cultivation) on the marginal lands
and reactivisation of sand dunes, due to biotic interference like,
uneconomic land use, overgrazing, urban fringe activities are also
affecting settlements and railways.
3. The livestock population and that of pressure on the
grazing land is considerably high. The result has been overgrazing and
deterioration of the surface vegetation conditions, largely responsible
for increased ecosystem degradation hazard. The low carrying capacity of
the land further intensifies in situ degradation. Uncontrolled grazing is
often added with indiscriminate cutting of trees and lopping to make the
various ecosystem degradation hazards more intensive.
4. Surface water resources of the tehsil are meager due
to lack of adequate rainfall. Potential catchments and watersheds are
almost non-existent. Nadis somewhat serve the population for a shorter
duration. Small and large tankas are numerous. Over-exploitation of ground
and available surface water resources for intensive and uneconomic use for
irrigation has led to the rise of water table, seepage problem,
waterlogging and increased salinity. Over-exploitation of groundwater for
irrigation purposes has resulted in irrigated farming on the sandy wastes,
sand dunes and marginal lands. This has resulted in the shifting of sands,
thereby causing the formation of sand dunes, piling up of sands in expanse
of double cropped lands.
5. Uneconomic and intensive uses of canal water in the
Pokaran tehsil has already developed some alarming problems. The seepage
problem has been noticed. It is estimated that this area will face
waterlogging and salinity problem within next 30-40 years. Indira Gandhi
Nahar Project (IGNP) has vastly changed the cropping pattern in the
northern part of the tehsil. Groundnut, cotton, mustard, wheat, gram,
taramira, etc. have been introduced in the areas, which previously used to
grow bajra and jowar only. Forest cover is negligible.

B. Integrated Natural Resources Mapping for Sustainable Development
Department of Space, Government of India initiated an
Integrated Mission for Sustainable Development to map various natural
resources like soil, surface and ground water resources, landforms and
geology, hydrogeomorphology, groundwater potential zones, landuse and land
capability classification, slope, transportation & communication etc. on
1:50000 scale. Then integration of all these natural resources to prepare
water and land resources development plans. Also socio-economic studies
were also conducted for the wholesome development. Being trained in remote
sensing, digital image processing and geographic information systems, I
also completed various project studies for the DOS.

includes nine tehsils viz. Anupgarh, Ganganagar, Gharsana, Karanpur,
Padampur, Raisinghnagar, Suratgarh, Sadulsar, and Vijainagar covering six
subscenes and 32 Survey of India topographical sheets was digitally
completed by using ARC/INFO software. Based on tone, texture, and shape on
the IRS satellite images, various wasteland categories were delineated.
Ground truthing of the selected sites for different categories was carried
out and information were collected from grassroots, district
administration and field. This project study was completed for the
Department of Space.
D. Socio-Economic and Natural Resources Surveys
Various organizations receive funds for varied activities. Before
initiating the project the resource appraisal is required and I completed
detailed resources appraisal surveys of two villages. I also carried out
integration of the resources and suggested recommendations and prepared

E. Educational Appraisal Study

A study entitled Access, Retention and Achievement of Students in Primary
Schools of Urban Slums in Rajasthan was carried in 1993. Report of the
study was conducted with Ms. Bharti Saxena and submitted to the UNICEF
through SANDHAN - a Jaipur based NGO. Five cities namely Ajmer, Jaipur,
Jodhpur, Kota and Udaipur were selected for the study. Various factors
affecting the reach of the slum children to the school were recorded.
Recommendations were suggested to overcome all the hindrances affecting
access of these children of urban slums to the school but also maximize
retention and achievement. A workshop was organized and all the issues
were discussed in the presence of various state government and
international funding agencies.
