Description of work:
Dr. V. Gopalakrishna is a post-graduate and a doctoral degree holder in
Kannada of Bangalore University, and has studied Malayalam, Sanskrit,
Telugu, Hindi and Tamil as well as English. Dr. Gopalakrishna, a toponymist
specialising in place names, is currently guiding several research scholars
to PhD degree in comparative studies. He has translated several works from
Malayalam to Kannada and vice-versa besides composing original scholarly
works in Kannada. He is editing A Multilingual Dictionary
(Kannada-Kannada-English-Tamil-Japanese) and multi-volume Encyclopaedia of
the Folk Culture of Karnataka as well as manuscripts and commemorative
volume projects. He is a life member of the Dravidian Linguistics
Association, the Place-name Society of India, Kannada Sahitiya Parishat,
Karnataka Itihasa Akademi, etc.
Dr. Gopalakrishna has published over 60 articles on place names,
linguistics and literature. His books include:
Kandara (1978) a collection of Malayalam short stories rendered into Kannada;
Sthalanama Adhyayangalu (1988) a collection of research papers in Kannada
on place-name studies;
Kannada Samskaram Nammude Abhimanam (1990) a Malayalam monograph translated
from Kannada;
Namakkal Ramalinga Pillai (1993) Kannada rendering of Tamil biography,
Sahitiya Akademi;
Tatvamasi, Kannada rendering of original Malayalam work, Sahitiya Akademi
Tanjavur to Vijayarajagiridurga, (editor) a travelogue in Kannada edited
from palmleaf manuscript (1997).
