Description of work:
Education:
Duke University (AB, AM, PhD)
Jawaharlal Nehru University (MPhil)
Research:
Major work on Rajasthan/Rajputana, especially Alwar State and
Eastern Rajasthan; focus of past work has been the changing relationship
among the members of the Alwar ruling lineage elite as the nature of the
state system changed under the impact of British Paramountcy and
indirect rule. More recent work has focused on the use of tangible honors,
political ceremonials and political architecture as an
arena for political interaction and the changes in these forms as the
underlying political system changed. Strong parallel interests in
environmental history, focused in the Northwest Indian arid zone
(Rajasthan and Saurashtra Gujarat, mainly), especially on the role of the
"State" in controlling access to scarce resources.
Parallel research interests:
Similar local political and cultural responses to indirect rule in the
Arabian Gulf, specifically in Qatar; role of Indian communities in the
Arabian Gulf in the 19th century.
