 Library Public Relations, Library Automation, and Digital Libraries 

ACADEMIC ATTAINMENTS: 

 Dr. P.V. Konnur is a holder of postgraduate master degree in Library 
and Information Science having obtained First Class - First Rank and the 
Gold Medal from the Bangalore University, Bangalore - Karnataka State, 
India. The Karnatak University, Dharwad, India, awarded him the degree of 
Doctor of Philosophy in Library & Information Science, in August 1995. The 
topic of his Ph.D. Thesis was "Library Public Relations: An Analytical 
Study of Karnataka Public Library System". He is a holder of diploma in 
Business Administration, which is a 3 years course offered by the S.R.C. 
Institute of Middle Management, Directorate of Technical Education, 
Government of Karnataka. He has also undergone the postgraduate Diploma in 
Computer Application offered by the Department of Computer Science, 
Karnatak University Dharwad, Karnatak State. 

PRACTICAL EXPERIENCES: 

 He has worked in the Department of Public Libraries, Government of 
Karnatak as an Assistant Librarian for nearly one and half decades (1972). 
He has served as Assistant Professor (Lecturer) in Gulbarga University for 
one year (1987-88) and later as an Assistant Professor and Associate 
Professor (Reader) in Karnatak University, Dharward. Presently, he is 
working as University Librarian and heading the postgraduate Course in 
Library and Information Science, Goa University, Goa. He has designed and 
introduced this course in the University since the last two academic 
years, after studying the curricula of several universities of the world. 
He has specialized in teaching the subjects viz. Special libraries, 
Information technology, Research methodologies and Economics and marketing 
of information. 

SPECIAL INTERESTS: 

 He has the honor of being the first University Librarian of Goa 
University. He initiated the Library Automation Activity and completed the 
same in a record time of less than one year comprising of creation of 
Database for 1.2 Lakhs of books, LAN within the library and WAN for campus 
and affiliated colleges. Using WWWISIS, Linux based web enabled retrieval 
software was developed. Now with the successful implementation of 
retrieval software he is planning to design an Open Source Library 
Software using Postgres - as back end and Browser as front end on Linux 
platform. For the benefit of academic community of Goa an "e-mail Alert 
Service" has been established. 

 A Dial-in-server is being installed in Goa University for the benefit of 
all the affiliated Colleges in Goa State. The Library of Goa University 
has a rare archival collection of nearly 8,000 documents dating back from 
18 century, to 16 century, pertaining to Goa Portugal Relations and 
History. Two eminent historians, Mr. Nuno Gonsalves and Sri.Pandurang 
Pissurlekar donated this archaeological literature. He has initiated 
measures to preserve this Historical Literature running into 500 Thousands 
of pages into the electronic format. He is planning to provide access to 
these rare resources through Internet to the world community. 

 He has proposed to establish an "International Center for Goan History 
and Culture" through which he has plans to digitize all the archival 
collection holdings of Goa University Library and also to digitize all 
collection holdings of different institutions/individual collections of 
Goa and outside Goa.
