Dr. Patrick Mendis, President of the Society for International 
Development (Minnesota Chapter) serves as Visiting Scholar in the 
Department of Agricultural and Applied Economics and Adjunct Lecturer in 
the Institute of International Studies at the University of Minnesota.

He is the author of Human Environment and Spatial Relationships in 
Agricultural Production (NY: Peter Lang Publications, 1992), The 
Political Economy of Poverty Alleviation (St. Paul: University of 
Minnesota Department of Agricultural and Applied Economics, 1992), and 
The Buddhist Equilibrium (St. Paul: University of Minnesota Department of 
Agricultural and Applied Economics, 1993). He has also published widely 
in professional journals and newspapers in the areas of sustainable 
development, agricultural development, tea plantations and economic 
development, poverty alleviation, Buddhist economics, and several others.

He received his BS in Business Administration (First Class Honors) from 
the University of Sri Jayawardenepura in Sri Lanka, MA in Public Policy 
and International Development from the Hubert H. Humphrey Institute of 
Public Affairs, and PhD in Geography (specialized in Agricultural 
Economics) fromt he University of Minnesota. Dr. Mendis is an Associate 
Fellow of the World Academy of Art and Science.
