description of work:
My teaching and research interests, generally, are 19th and 20th century
Indian history, with an emphasis on Islam, Muslims in India, education, and
women in South Asia. My publications include: The Khilafat Movement
(Columbia UP and OUP Delhi, 1982); The Extended Family (ed. vol. on women's
participation in politics in India and Pakistan - 1981); Voices of Silence
(tr. from Urdu of Altaf Husain Hali's works about women - 1986); editing of
Ian H. Douglas, Abul Kalam Azad: A Religious and Intellectual Biography (OUP
Delhi, 1988). I have recently completed a book-length manuscript on the
history of women's education among Indian Muslims in the late 19th and early
20th cs. My current research interests focus on the intellectual history of
the city of Delhi in the generation before 1857.
