Description of work:
Ph.D. the University of Chicago, Committee on Human Development. 
Anthropological psychology and lifespan human development; culture and
communication.  Research in tradition and change in the family and
community in India.  Hinduism as a living tradition in family and
community.  Cultural symbols and interpersonal communication. The
ethnography of communication and comparative discursive practices.  Family
communication: socialization, gender, age and social relatedness
represented in everyday interactions.  Folk healers and their clients in
urban and rural settings in Orissa, India.  Comparative concepts of the
person.  Culture and comparative social thought and ethics.  Research in
urban and rural Orissa. Cultural emphasis Hindu tradition, continuity and
change at the micro-social level, and on comparisons between indigenous
Euro-American and South Asian views of the person and social thought. 

Teaching interests include: culture and thought, lifespan development in
cross-cultural perspective, cultural/anthropological psychology or
psychological anthropology; culture and ethics; culture and gender;
culture and family; medical anthropology; ethnography of communication;
culture and interpersonal communication; semiotic anthropology and
sociology.
