Description of work:

For the past 10 years I have been involved in cultural ecological research
in the Karakoram Himalaya of northern Pakistan. This research has
included work primarily in Baltistan, but also in Nagyr and Hunza. My
primary focus in Balti villages has involved the examination of linkages
among agro-ecology-social organization, social structure and vulnerability
to natural hazards. I am currently involved in a research program which
looks at portering relations and transcultural interaction in northern
Pakistan. This involves examining the contemporary structure of a
portring economy in terms of its origins in corvee, and how 'outsider'
representations of place and people in northern Pakistan have stemmed from
interactions centred on this coercive economy.
