DESCRIPTION OF WORK:

Area of interest is S. Asia in general, in the early modern period,
roughly 1450-1750, though I have broader comparative interests in this
period of history. My 'theoretical' stance is mostly Modern World System
theory, and political economy in general. I have published and/or
researched on initial European presences in S. Asia, on trade and economic
history, on maritime history, most obviously the Indian Ocean, and on the
movement of peoples, especially the Muslim pilgrim [hajj] to Mecca from
India. Most recently I have been researching connections across the
Arabian Sea between the Swahili Coast and western India.
