DESCRIPTION OF WORK

Having taken advantage of early retirement in 1989, I continue to read and
write about contemporary or post-Independence Indian English (or
Indo-English or Anglo-Indian) poetry and literary criticism, including
"theory," though I urge that the fad of deconstruction and most
post-structuralist jargonizing be avoided in treating literature in the
multicultural Indian context. See my last book: ABSENT AUTHORITY: ISSUES
IN CONTEMPORARY INDIAN ENGLISH CRITICISM (Sterling Pub. Co., New Delhi,
1992), copies available on request to the above Seattle address. Though I
was Fulbright prof in Delhi University in 1971-72 (and have returned 7
more times, including another Fulbright research year 1986-87), my first
major project was in editing VOICES OF EMERGENCY, PROTEST POETRY OF THE
1975-77 EMERGENCY BOMBAY 1983. SEE ALSO REVIEWS IN WORLD LIT TODAY
