Areas of research and teaching:
(1) Languages and texts of early and middle-period South Asia. Languages
of specialization: Sanskrit, the literary Prakrits (and very marginally,
old Kannada, Braj). Textual forms of specialization: kavya,
(2) Historical "cultural studies" of early and middle-period South Asia,
with special interest in critical literary history and in the cultural
politics of imperial formations.
(3) Contemporary cultural criticism, including the critique of orientalism
and analysis of the politics of contemporary Indian culture, particularly
processes of nationalism and communalism.
