Discipline: history, cultural history, political history

Research:  colonial south India, Tamil nationalism, legal anthropology,
women's history, modern and pre-modern political culture, south Indian
politics. 

Major publication: Kingship and Political Practice in Colonial India, 
Cambridge University Press, 1996.

Activities: Nordic Association for South Asian Studies (NASA), Center for
Development and the Environment (University of Oslo), Norwegian Forum for
South Asia (NoFSA).

Currently working on elite politics in Karnataka state, involving issues of
rivalry, factional competition, corruption and concepts of honor and respect.
