Description of work:
Longitudinal research conducted over a period of 32 years in the Marwar
region and language of central Rajasthan in northwestern India has
produced publications on land reform, family structure and incremental
architecture, settlement pattern, the organization of agrarian production,
and the development of irrigation according to indigenous conceptions of
conjunction water management. A full census of a 1600 member community of
24 castes in 1963-65 studied variations in family corporate structure,
sibiing and collateral set marriages, marriage networks, partnership
alliances, and occupational and adaptive strategies. Recent Fulbright
Research Fellowship with the Institute of Development Studies in Jaipur
sought to integrate local indigenous knowledge with modern hydrologic
conceptions about groundwater quality and sustainability. Presently
studying the street as common property.

Teach courses in comparative social organization, ecological anthropology,
peasant societies, culture change, ethnography, and conflict in cultural
context. Present interests extend to natural resource policy,
environmental history, dynamics of social dilemmas, and the mathematics of
complexity.
