Description of work:
I am presently completing a D.Phil on Gujarat between c. 1200 and 1500.
Research interests:
Gujarat, Rajasthan, Sind, Punjab, Malwa, 10th to 19th century, with
particular interests in the Sultanate period.
Religion in South Asia: conversion, cults, genealogies, caste.
Islam in western India (including Sufis, Ismailis and Sunnis).
Jainism, Vaisnavism and other sects in western India.
Indo-Persian historical literature; Gujarati caste and sect puranas;
bardic literature and genealogies.
Trade in the Indian Ocean, 8th to 19th century, especially the role of
Gujarati merchants.
Religious and caste reform and identity movements in Western India in the
19th and 20th centuries.
Art (especially manuscript painting) and architecture in Western India,
from the 10th century.
Navigation and cartography in South Asia and the Indian Ocean.
