Description of Work:
1. I have been working as a professional forester in the Indian Himalayas
in state of Himachal Pradesh (HP) since 1984. During last 15 years, I have
worked as a researcher, trainer, planner in various wings of the forest
department. I have been involved in project preparation work for the
externally aided forestry development projects in Himachal Pradesh.
2. During last 8 years, I have been actively associated with the
introduction, testing and development of Joint Forest Management
approaches in the field. I have prepared training material, and
operational guidelines for front line foresters for implementing JFM with
local communities. I have run and facilitated about 35 training workshops
for foresters and local people for skill development in JFM approaches.
3. Since 1994, I have been undertaking part time research for a PhD with
University of Wales (UK) and have done my field work in Himalayan villages
in HP. I have studied various local institutions in forestry sector,
community-foresters relationship, and the institutional and policy reform
process undertaken by the forest departments since 1988 with the issuance
of a new pro people forest policy and its subsequent implementation in
field. I have also undertaken action research to test and find options for
finding appropriate forms of local organisation for fostering management
partnerships between state and local groups.
4. As a Volunteer, I have also been involved in a Total and Post Literacy
Campaign in HP since 1992 and NGO networking for participatory natural
resource management in HP.
