Description of work:
I have written on South Asian languages (principally Marathi, Hindi,
Nepali, Tamil, Malayalam, Konkani) from the point of view of grammatical
structure, history, and sociolinguistic variation. I am currently
completing a book on linguistic archaeology of the South Asian
subcontinent, which explores the prehistory of Indo-Aryan and Dravidian
languages on the basis of various kinds of evidence including lexical
borrowing, grammatical diffusion (convergence), plant names, place names,
and correlations with archaeology. Future research will focus more on
face-to-face communication in a wider sense (including both linguistic and
non-verbal elements) in a culture-sensitive framework which looks at both
communication and miscommunication in terms of participants' backgrounds,
world views, socialization patterns, etc.
