Activities/Research experience & interests:
My research experience is in early modern global economic history,
maritime trade and European (Portuguese, Spanish, Dutch and English)
relations with Asia, early modern European history and its expansion, and
colonial Iberian and Dutch society in Asia, Africa and America in the late
sixteenth to the mid-eighteenth centuries.
My present research interests and projects:
The Colonial Port City and the Maritime Trade of Asia: Batavia and
Cinnamon, Silver and Opium, 1684-1792.
Oceans, Ideas and Empires: European Imperial Ideologies, the Law of the
Seas, Global Strategy and Naval Warfare from Columbus to the Present.
