Description of work:
Preparing a book on merchant colonies in India with particular attention
to Jews. The Jews came from the Mediterranean area (Egypt, Tunisia,
Palestine) and from Yemen and Mesopotamia (Babylonia) mainly to trade in
diamonds. coral, spices, and textiles. They were linked through religion
and their particular language (Judaeo-Arabic)as well as through family
relationships from the Mediterranean to China. India was the center of
their network. They had close ties with Armenian traders whose patterns
of interest and operation were similar.
Economic and commerical history: Jewish traders between India and the
Mediterranean, Red Sea, Persian Gulf from Roman times to the 20th century;
spices, precious stones, textiles, indigo, paper, metals.
