Description of work:
I teach courses in Comparative Non-Western Government and South Asian
Politics, with special emphasis on India. In India my main research has
been in the area of centre-state relations, ethnic conflict and the
politics of resource allocation. For the last three years my focus has
been on the inter-state politics surrounding the dispute over the
development of the Narmada River, with all its human rights and
environmental consequences. I am especially interested in the history and
politics of the state of Gujarat. I speak Gujarati and some Hindi. I am
currently Chair of the Centre for South Asian Research at UBC and
President of the Shastri Indo-Canadian Institute (1994-96).
