A General biographical dictionary, Benezit is comparable to Thieme-Becker, but smaller, with a  French orientation. Includes artists signatures. 

Dizionario Biografico Degli Italiani. (1960-)

This is an example of a national biographical dictionary.  When finished, the DBI will be the Italian equivalent to the British Dictionary of National Biography online as Oxford Dictionary of National Biography (Online).
