OTHER GENERAL RESOURCES FOR ARCHIVAL RESEARCH

Librarians at Avery Library's Reference Desk can help you with many sources available on Avery's home page, such as the New York City Buildings Research Guide and Architecture: Basic Resources for Research. Many of the resources listed in these guides may also be found at public libraries.

For a comprehensive listing of architectural archives in the United States, please consult Carnegie Mellon University's guide to Architectural Archives Sites. For United States and international architectural archives and museums, please consult the International Confederation of Architectural Museums (icam) membership directory.

In addition to the colleges, universities, museums, and historical societies noted above, patrons are advised to consult the special collection holdings of many major public libraries. Among those libraries with especially strong architectural and urban history archival holdings are the Library of Congress, the New York Public Library, the Boston Public Library, and the Chicago Public Library.

Important information about U.S. repositories of specific architectural archives can also be found by searching the COPAR (Committee for the Preservation of Architectural Records) newsletters, published between 1974 and 1985.

For information about significant landscape design archives, you may wish to consult the Catalog of Landscape Records, housed in the Archives and Manuscripts Department at the Mertz Library at the New York Botanical Garden.

To search across national archival holdings, consult ArchiveGrid, a subscription database available through many college and university libraries and some major public libraries.
