- Circulation Policy for the Butler Media Collection
- The collection is comprised of the Butler Media Collection and the Butler Media Res Collection.
The Butler Media Collection consists primarily of feature films in VHS format. Anyone with borrowing privileges at Columbia University Libraries and affiliated institutions can check out up to two films from this collection overnight. Butler Media Res consists primarily of documentaries, ethnographic films, performance adaptations, and the DVD collection. Titles from the Butler Media Res collection circulate only to faculty for class screenings and review. Requests should be submitted one week in advance. Items are checked out for one week.
- Submitting course film requests

Faculty should submit course film requests to Nancy E. Friedland, Butler Media Services Librarian:
Requests for new title purchases should be submitted at least 4-6 weeks prior to the start of the semester.
NOTE: Films owned by the Butler Media Collection are not listed on course reserve lists. Please check CLIO for copy information.
- Personal Copies
- Instructors can place personal copies of commercially acquired videorecordings and DVDs on Butler Reserves for a semester. The maximum number of copies per title is five. The titles will be added to the reserves course list. Personal copies will be identified as non-circulating or in library use only. See Butler Reserves for additional information.
- Class Screenings

Instructors can reserve titles held in the Butler Media Res Collection for class screenings. Submit a screening schedule or syllabus with titles and dates at least one week in advance to Nancy E. Friedland:
Titles will be held under the instructor's name or designated person at the Butler Reserves Desk for check out on requested dates. PLEASE NOTE: If the requested film is from the Butler Media Res collection, only faculty and instructors with semester loan privileges will be allowed to check out the item. If faculty send a TA, the student should have a Deputy Borrowing Card, available from the Library Information Office. See Deputy Borrower Instructions
