Butler Reference Services


The History & Humanities Division at Butler Library provides a range of reference and research services to Columbia University students, faculty, and staff, as well as visiting researchers.

  • The reference desk is located in the Lawrence A. Wien Reading Room (301 Butler).


  • Individual research consultations with a librarian subject specialist are available by appointment to students and faculty working on long-term projects.


  • Telephone reference is available during reference hours: (212) 854-2241.


  • IM with a History & Humanities reference librarian via AIM (AOL), Google Talk, Windows Live (MSN), and Yahoo! Or chat right now without an account.


  • E-mail your reference question, or, if you're a non-Columbia affiliate, write to reference@columbia.edu.


  • Check out the list of  Library Classes & Workshops offered in Butler.  We also offer research courses for graduate students  (G4000 and G4001) and library research classes for seminars.


  • CU instructors, contact us to set up an instruction session for your course.
