Worldwide Polling Organizations

Gallup and Harris, two major American polling organizations which originated opinion polls, operate worldwide through their networks of branch offices and affliliates.

• The Gallup Organization This New-Jersey-based pioneer in opinion polls boasts branch offices in 25 countries in Latin America, Asia and Europe.
  
  
• Louis Harris and Associates Louis Harris and Associates has deposited its archives at the University of North Carolina, including an important collection of surveys conducted in Latin American countries.
  
  

Indexes to Published Results of Polls

To find polls on a specific topic, there are a number of specialized indexes available. Some of these indexes go back to the early days of opinion surveys. For example, Gallup polls are indexed since 1934.

• UNC Institute for Research in Social Science Data Archive This data center is the home to the Harris Poll archives and the cooperative collection of state-level survey data nation-wide.
• Statistical Resources on the Web, Political Science, Public Opinion (University of Michigan) A comprehensive list of resources for political science, including public opinion polls.
• University of Oxford Department of Statistics A good starting point for exploring European resoures. In addition to UK and North American sites, it offers links to Scandinavian, South African, Dutch, Hungarian, Israeli and New Zealand sources.
• Poll and Survey Data and Findings (Princeton University) Has a list of state-level polls.
• The Center for Applied Social Survey (SCPR and the University of Southampton with the University of Surrey) Includes the question bank and documents relating to survey methods.
  
  

Online Sources of Recent Poll Results by Geografic area/Country

A number of sites provide online summaries of recent polls. Polling organizations may offer archival resources in addition to recent polls. Data available at newspaper and magazine sites tend to be current data only. If they have archives, these resources often require paid subscription. More comprehensive archives are found in the U. S. sources which include both American and foreign data such as Gallup, Harris and Roper.

Latin America

• Latin America (ROPER) Since 1989, the Roper Center collected over 1,000 surveys from 16 countries in Latin America, mainly from Argentina, brazil, Chile, Mexico, peru and Venezuela. These surveys were conducted by universities, institutes, individual scholars and private research firms.
• Latin American & Spanish Polls (IRSS, UNC) Joint program with Duke University. Searching an online index, one can access data from El Salvador, Brazil, Chile, Costa Rica, Mexico, Panama, Spain and Venezuela.
  
  

Japan

• The Japanese Data Archive, Roper Center Online data and library collections of surveys done in Japan since 1980. The data on party identification goes back to 1946. The online database, JPOLL, is a question-level database in English.
  
  

France

• IFOP A major polling organization in France, which has published printed reports since the 1930's, offer online data of recent polls.
• SOFRES Index to published results of polls and a summary of a few recent survey results.
• BVA One of the best sites for online access to both current and archival survey data. The archives presently cover poll results since 1997 on a wide range of political, economic, social and international topics.
• TMO This marketing research firm has some publicly accessible data. Connect to News Communiques de Presse for summaries of its opinion research.
