Finding it hard to keep up with literature in your field? You have several options available to you, free of charge. Some services are free to all while others are free to you because Columbia University Libraries have made agreements with various publishers. Relevant services in the sciences are:
ASAP Alerts - American Chemical Society (free to all)
For journals published by the American Chemical Society, you can sign up to receive e-mail notices on a) weekly basis OR b) as they are published. For more details, go to

ELSEVIER - SCIENCE DIRECT (CU specific)
For journals published by Elsevier Science Publishers, you can sign up for a) search alert and/or b) new issue alert. A search alert allows you to define a search that can be saved and run daily or weekly. Signing up for new issue alert will enable you to receive table of contents of selected journals as it becomes available on Science Direct.
To sign up for this service, you need to create your own user profile. Go to http://www.sciencedirect.com/, click on personal login, and create your free personal profile. Once you sign on under your personal profile, "Alerts" will be an option at the top of your screen.

Nature magazine offers an e-mail Alerting Service through which you can sign up to receive tables of contents and news digests from any of the Nature titles (Nature, Nature Biotechnology, Nature Cell Biology, Nature Genetics, Nature Medicine, Nature Neuroscience, Nature Structural Biology) that you are interested in.
