Important updates, particularly trials and availability of e-resources are announced here. In general, the system requirements for using e-resources are Microsoft Windows 2000 or XP and IE browser of higher version. Computers on Columbia IP range should be used.

Gu gong qi kan tu wen zi liao ku Database of articles and images from the National Palace Museum's periodicals becomes inaccessible because the vendor loses its rights to carry this database. The librarian is negotiating with the vendor who has obtained the rights in hope to continue the subscription of the database.

The proxy connection is being created in hope that Columbia users can use from computers anywhere.
DemographicsNowChina Provided by China Data Center, University of Michigan. On trial through May, 2009.

Scroll down the screen of China data online. In the left column, find and click on DemographicsNowChina.

It offers China demographic maps and Census data reports in a very fast, convenient way, including:

  • Over 1,500 unique demographic variables and 1,000 economic variables
  • Geographic data, including province, prefecture, county, and approximate township boundaries
  • Precise data retrieval for radius and polygon trade areas
  • 2000 population Census data for over 50,000 townships in China
  • 2004 economic Census data for over 30,000 zip points in China
  • Population estimates for 9.6 million square kilometer grids.
Apabi Newspapaers Provided by Apabi/Founder Group, Peking University. On trial through June 11, 2009.

It includes about 300 newspapers in both full image and full text.
April 2009
TEPS (Taiwan Electronic Periodical Services) 台灣電子期刊 Subscription from April 2009.

It includes several hundreds of scholarly journals, of which half are of humanities and social sciences.
CEPS (Chinese Electronic Periodical Services) 中文電子期刊 Subscription from April 2009.

It includes about 1,600 journals on humanities and social sciences from the Greater China Area.

CEPS and TEPS also include hundreds of journals of natural and applied sciences and medicine.
NPM (National Palace Museum Online) 故宮線上 An art image database, it includes tens of thousands of art objects from the museum in Taiwan.

As a result of special arrangement, it is accessible to Columbia from April 2009 to April 2010.
Superstar Du xiu 读秀 It is like combined Google Scholar and Google Books from China, but with unmatched search power and enormous amount of full-text contents of any possible type.

Significant efforts have been made in hope to strike a deal to make it accessible. Now it's at the stage of awaiting a decision from Starr and Butler leaders concerning e-resources.

The current access may be closed anytime.
Superstar Wen shi zi liao 超星文史资料 The database includes about 20,000 volumes of Wen shi zi liao, largely first-person narratives on Chinese history and culture.

Significant efforts, especially by faculty members, have been made in hope to strike a deal to make it accessible, now at the stage of awaiting a decision from Starr and Butler leaders.

The current access may be closed anytime.
Apabi E-rerence Apabi 电子参考书 Thousands of important core reference works on humanities and social sciences are included.

Apabi Reader needs to be downloaded and installed for viewing contents.

Apabi Digital Library Apabi 电子书 About 1,300 Apabi E-books have been made available. Apabi Reader needs to be downloaded and installed for viewing e-book contents. When one starts to access an e-book, it's prompted automatically for downloading and installation of the reader.

The library's computers still await the installation of the reader.
China Reference Works Online 中国工具书网络 A product of Tsinghua-Tongfang via EastView. Trial access is to May 13, 2009.

Nearly two thousdands titles, over half are on natural and applied sciences. Not all of the contents are accessible.

CEPS (Chinese Electronic Periodical Services) 中文電子期刊 It includes about 1,600 journals on humanities and social sciences from the Greater China Area. Trial from March 23 through April 23, 2009.

CEPS and TEPS also include hundreds of journals of sciences.

The integrated database is to be licensed for access very soon.

February-March 2009
Apabi E-resources Apabi电子书 Apabi E-resources, from Peking University Founder Group, including E-books and Reference Works are being acquired.

About 1,500 Apabi E-books have been made available. Apabi Reader needs to be downloaded and installed for viewing e-book contents. When one starts to access an e-book, it's prompted automatically for downloading and installation of the reader. It is hoped with the help of the Columbia University Libraries Systems Office, the library's computers will be installed the reader soon.
