Important updates, particularly trials and availability of e-resources are announced here. In general, the system requirements for using e-resources are  Microsoft Windows 2000 or XP and IE browser of higher version; and computers on Columbia IP range, or through Columbia proxy connection, should be used. Please let the librarian know any access problems, comments that you may have.

May-June 2008
Jie fang jun bao (PLA Daily) 解放军报 Columbia IP range access to PLA Daily from now through July 18.

The platform the vendor developed was originally for Russian and Ukrainian resources. So, when clicking on the "search" tab at the top of the screen page one can see the other databases which Columbia has subscribed. To search PLA Daily only, one may (or may not) unmark other unneeded databases. No proxy connection is available from computers outside of Columbia IP range.

Pictures, images, graphs, etc. are not available in the PLA Daily trial.

Superstar Wen shi zi liao 超星文史资料 On trial at Du xiu, a bibliographic database for books, one can see "Zhuan ti shu ju ku" "Bu fen shi du" - "Wen shi zi liao". Or click on the left link directly.

The Superstar Reader should be downloaded and installed by clicking link by the green arrow on the page in order to access the contents. The access is open to Columbia IP range, no proxy connection available from computers outside of Columbia IP range.

One may also wish to play with Du xiu, an established bibliographic database for books, which is the second search area visible on the page, and Du xiu full text search for books, journals, etc. in the first search area on the page.

March-April 2008
Apabi E-resources Apabi全文数据库 Apabi E-resources, from Peking University Founder Group, including three full-text databases of Yearbooks, Reference Works, and E-books, are on trial through September 30, 2008.

Login information is needed; it can be obtained from the library. The last database needs Apabi Reader for viewing e-texts. When one starts to view the content, it's prompted automatically for downloading and installation of the reader.

CNKI China Yearbooks CNKI中国年鉴 Tsinghua-Tongfang CNKI/Eastview offers CYFD (China Yearbooks Full-text Database) Free Beta Access. Trial access login may be needed. The access point can be found in the interface of China Academic Journals, which includes the login information.
February 2008
Si ku quan shu On February 20, 2008, the Libraries System Office informed that the problem of proxy connection to the database was fixed. Thus, Columbia UNI longin can be used for accessing the database on computers outside of Columbia IP range.
January 2008
China Academic Journals (CAJ) 中国学术期刊全文数据库, with Century Journals Project (CJP) 世纪期刊 integrated Full access to CJP Expanded now available while its subscription being finalized.

Expanded CJP includes about 1,200 titles of social sciences and humanities from the earliest issue, mostly in the 1950s or 1960s, up through 1993. CJP Expanded,  as well as CJP First Phase which has been acquired for long, are integrated into CAJ interface for search.

The integrated CAJ interface now includes journal articles from the earliest issue to current. One may search CAJ/CJP separately or by using CAJ integrated interface.

December 2007
Si ku quan shu  interruption (December 26 - 28, 2007) A notice was received as of December 19, 2007:

Becaue of reinstallation of the data, "systems staff will need to take the server off line for three days as per the usual procedure established by the publisher, Digital Heritage.  In order to minimize disruption, we have decided on the following dates. Wednesday, December 26 through Friday, December 28."

Access to CAJ, CCND & CJP (December 24, 2007 – January 1, 2008)

A notice was received as of December 14, 2007:

There is a scheduled service upgrade of the CNKI platform, to version KNS5.2. "To accommodate the upgrade, the English-language interface of CNKI will be temporarily unavailable from Dec. 24, 2007 – January 1, 2008. We regret any inconvenience this may cause. The Chinese interface, however, will be available without interruption throughout, and is also accessed via the URL http://china.eastview.com."

Three subscribed databases: Century Journals Project; China Academic Journals, and China Core Newspapers Database are supported by CNKI platform.

Scripta Sinica New Version 漢籍電子文獻 The new version with new interface has been released. Please click on the button of 授權使用 to search.

The old version will not be maintained. But before it times out, some may find its old version, especially its listed book titles, quite useful.
National Index of Chinese Newspapers & Periodicals 全国报刊索引数据库 A tentative arrangement of document delivery has been reached with Shanghai Library, the creator of the index.

Full text articles of the database that found unavailable at Columbia or other libraries in North America can be delivered from Shanghai Library. Please contact library staff member Ms. Sherry Pu for requesting document delivery.

Expanded "Century Journals Project"

On trial, through November 22, 2007. Expanded CJP includes 3,500 or so journals, from their first issue through 1993. There are over 1,000 titles on social sciences and humanities, of which many started the first issue in the 1950s or 1960s.

To access, please follow the steps below:
1. Click on the subscribed "Century Journals Project" First Phase
2. In the upper-right drop-down menu, choose "China Academic Journals Full-text Database (Includes CJP)"
3. Search.

National Index of Chinese Newspapers & Periodicals 全国报刊索引数据库 A bibliographic (not full-text) index of Chinese newspapers & periodicals from 1857 to current; Columbia IP range access.

Full text articles of the database that found unavailable at Columbia or other libraries in North America can be delivered from Shanghai Library, the creator of the database. Please contact library staff member Ms. Sherry Pu for requesting document delivery.

Renda fu yin bao kan zi liao 人大复印报刊资料 on trial People's University fu yin bao kan zi liao, covers 1978-2005; including full-text article database, a database of citation index, and a database of integration of the two.

Columbia subscribed the database, and then discontinued due to its access problems. The vendor cannot offer the date of trial expiration, which may be anytime.

Chinese Electronic Periodical Service, about 1,600 journals on humanities and social sciences from the Greater China Area; periodical articles from 1991. Trial through October 9, 2007; Columbia IP range access.

NPM (台灣)故宮線上 National Palace Museum online, including thousands of art objects from the museum. Trial through October 9, 2007; Columbia IP range access.
China Times 臺灣中國時報 Current and archival contents included. Trial through September 24, 2007. Morningside campus IP range access. One may request login information from the librarian.

National Index of Chinese Newspapers & Periodicals 全国报刊索引数据库

On trial. The login trial ends on June 25, 2007.

A bibliographic index of Chinese newspapers & periodicals from 1857 to current, this database contains the most comprehensive citation data of Chinese newspapers, journals and magazines in humanities, social sciences, and science and technolgoy.  It includes 10 packages divided by years and by two general categories of social sciences and science & technology. Its pre-1949 packages are considered to be very useful; many of the pre-1949 data are not included in the trial.

Subscription to the full database is being made. Ask library staff for login information.

Index to Chinese Periodical  Literature of Taiwan 中文期刊篇目索引

This database covers over 4,000 periodicals in Chinese and Western languages published in Taiwan, HK, and Macao from 1970 to current. "It includes general works; philosophy, religion; natural science; applied science; social science; history, geography, and biography; language and literature; art."

Some full texts are available. More importantly, you may request some periodical articles that you cannot find at North American libraries to be delivered from the National Central Library to you promptly (via the Star East Asian Library). It’s like you’re using National Central Library periodical collections at Columbia.

Electronic Journals via Clio

Thanks to efforts at Butler Library, individual journal titles with full-text accessible in our subscribed databases have been activated their links in CLIO to the full texts. However, many links of the journals are not full text accessible. One reason might be that the library has not subscribed the specific full-text package. While the unworkable links may be corrected under Butler Library's arrangement, users are advised to check the status of full texts through subscribed databases when CLIO links do not work.

Scripta Sinica The finalized agreement to acquire online access to the restricted portion of Scripta Sinica, Academic Sinica is being signed by Columbia library authorities. It is hoped the online access will soon start upon the signing of the agreement.
January 2007
Improved Guo xue bao dian A relatively large database of Chinese classics from a Beijing-based information company, including nearlly all of the essential Chinese classics. Some texts of Republican Period were also included. Improvements include that more materials are added, the option of traditional Chinese is added, and search functions become better.

China Academic Journals: IP Access Temporary Interruption

As of December 29, 2006, China Academic Journals and other databases of Tsinghua-TongFang via EastView experience a temporary interruption in IP access. But, the databases can be accessed by using login and password. One may get the login and password from the librarian and the Circulation Desk staff members.

Gu jin tu shu ji cheng

Officially subscribed after trials. It is a database via EastView, which also named it "The Complete Classics Collection of Ancient China."

The original book set in 10,000 juan was obtained as a gift from the Qing government to open the library over 100 years ago. The e-version is full-text searchable. Access is by IP authentication and available to unlimited Columbia authorized users. One should click on "IP 會員登入."

Cultural Revolution Database, 2006 Database from the Chinese University of Hong Kong.

October 2006
Access of China Academic Journals & China Core Newspaper Database Access problems have been reported. CAJ, CCND provider is upgrading systems and redesigning the interface. As of October 23, 2006, when connected, the new interface, "New CNKI platform", may be clicked on, particularly when access via the old interface has connection, search, and downloading problems. The new interface is not problem-free either, but generally has access results better than the old interface.
Cultural Revolution Database, 2006 The online version of the database is now ready, an one month trial account has been arranged for Columbia IP range access from October 21 to November 20, 2006. Consisting of nearly 30 million words, the database is made up of the following sections:
     Part I: CCP Documents, Directives, and Bulletins concerning the Cultural Revolution.
     Part II: Mao Zedong's Speeches, Directives, and Writings concerning the Cultural Revolution.
     Part III: Lin Biao's Speeches, Directives, and Writings concerning the Cultural Revolution.
     Part IV: Speeches, Instructions, and Other Writings by CCP Leaders during the Cultural Revolution.
     Part V: Important Newspaper and Magazine Editorials and Articles concerning the Cultural Revolution.
     Part VI: Important Documents of the Red Guards and the Mass Movement during the Cultural Revolution.
     Part VII: Important Documents of Heterodox Thoughts during the Cultural Revolution.
Wanfang Data

Trial is set up for Columbia IP range access again, through November 10, 2006.
Wanfang Data or its Chinese Studies Section includes a broad collection of materials related to Chinese studies.
Coverage: Journals, particularly university journals; Dissertations, including master's degree theses and Ph.D. dissertations; Conference proceedings; and Policies and Laws of China.

Paper Gods A digital project of the Goodrich collection of Rare/Special Collection of our library, including ephemera of popular faith, particularly selected woodblock prints of household gods from China in the 1920s and 1930s;  to be finalized.
Guba hua gong diao cha lu A digital project of a 6-volume set of Rare/Special Collection of our library officially finalized in the summer, containing the original depositions of 279 Chinese indentured laborers in Cuba and related governmental documents, revealing the unusual history of forced immigration in the late 19th century.
Renda fu yin bao kan zi liao People's University fu yin bao kan zi liao is to be reinstated, including full-text article database, a database of citation index and a database of integration of the two databases.
Guo xue bao dian A relatively large database of Chinese classics from a Beijing-based information company, including nearlly all of the essential Chinese classics. Login can be obtained from the librarian.

Online China Data While its subscription being processed, it is made fully accessible to Columbia IP computers without login requirement. PC computers, IE browser, are highly recommended to avoid computer errors.
China Maxx e-books SuperStar Digital Library's trial access based on Columbia IP range still has access problems when login isn't used. Troubleshooting goes on.

China Data Center offers trial access to Online China Data for  Morningside Campus access, valid till April 30, 2006.
It covers the following databases:

4. China City Statistics (1996-)
5. China County Statistics (1997-)

China E-books SuperStar Digital Library offers trial access to its China Maxx e-books  via both Morningside Campus and login till June 12, 2006.
Books are largely of humanities and social sciences. When difficult to connect, trial login can be obtained from the library.

Chinese Civilization in Time and Space CCTS is working as of March 10, 2006, thanks to the help of the Library System Office.
Two Databases of Taiwan Taiwan Newspaper Database and Palace Museum Periodicals Database have been officially licensed and accessible.
Chinese Civilization in Time and Space CCTS is down again (as of the week of March 6, 2006). The Library System Office and the Academic Sinica, Taiwan were both made aware. We hope the database will work very soon.

Charles Muller Digital Dictionary of Buddhism The database and other Muller dictionaries were down for days, but the connection and access has been restored since February 22, 2006.
Chinese Civilization in Time and Space Thanks to the great efforts made by Academic Sinica Computing Center & Columbia Library Systems Office, the CCTS becomes operational as of February 22, 2006.
CHANT Suspension for Days CHANT Notice, "Suspension of CHANT Service":
"Due to the network system maintenance, the CHANT Database will be suspended from 1:00pm HKT 18 February to 9:30am HKT 20 February, 2006. We apologize for any inconvenience caused."
Zhongguo li dai shi ke shi liao hui bian Full-text Database Zhongguo li dai shi ke shi liao hui bian (quan wen jian suo ban) acquired, but not yet uploaded to the Designated Chinese Computer, which the Library Systems Office has informed to deliver but not yet delivered.
Full-text Newspapers from Taiwan Accessible Newspapers in Taiwan in full text or scanned image covers 14 leading newspapers of Taiwan, some from their starting issues.
CHANT May Be Down CHANT Notice, "Suspension of CHANT Service":

January 2006

Chinese Civilization in Time and Space The database continues to be down. The Library System Office and the Academic Sinica, Taiwan were both aware. We hope the two computer terminals will be operational soon.

New Databases from Taiwan to Access

1. It is hoped the complete access to Scripta Sinica of Taiwan Academic Sinica will be available soon as a result of a relatively big exchange project.
2. Taiwan Newspaper Database from Taiwan is being licensed.
3. Palace Museum Periodicals Database from Taiwan is also being licensed.

A Database Discontinued

The database of the "People’s University fu yin bao kan zi liao" was discontinued starting September 2005.
Chinese Book Allocation Inadequate Because of limited budget, recommended titles, particularly titles that Avery Architectural and Fine Arts Library, the Watson Library of Business and Economics, and the Arthur W. Diamond Law Library are supposed to order, will be ordered very selectively by the Chinese Collection.
