FINDING BOOKS AND OTHER PUBLISHED MATERIALS

Library catalogs and selected databases provide the most direct means of locating books and other published materials (i.e.  non-journal articles) on your topic.   Columbia's online catalog, CLIO, is an excellent place to start, but you should also explore other catalogs to determine what has been published.

Catalogs

CLIO – Columbia University Libraries’ Online Catalog
Online Catalog for Columbia, Barnard, and Union Theological Seminary Libraries.  Contains records for  materials added to the Columbia University Libraries since 1981, and many materials acquired before that date.  About 92% of the collection has been included in CLIO.
The CARD CATALOG in Butler Reference, organized by author/title and by subject, is no longer updated.  But it may have information about the small number of items that are not yet in the online CLIO.  Don't forget to check here as a next step when looking for pre-1980 books.
CLIO HELP

LWEB's CATALOGS page
Links to catalogs of other campus libraries, and those of nearby institutions.  There are also links to large, national bibliographic databases.

WorldCat
WorldCat contains information on books and other published and archival materials held in libraries throughout the United States and in selected libraries abroad.  Invaluable tool for searching for books beyond Columbia, and for verifying bibliographic information.  Advanced search allows you to limit by publication year(s), language, formats, etc.

Biblioteca Nacional de España
Catalogs for Spain's largest library.  Good for verifying bibliographic information and locating books that may not be widely held in the U.S.

Obtaining Books Beyond Columbia

BorrowDirect - BOOKS ONLY
If the book you need is not available at Columbia, request books directly from Brown, Cornell, Dartmouth, the University of Pennsylvania, Princeton and Yale.   Best for searching titles/authors of “known” items; not recommended for keyword of subject searching.  Service does NOT allow you to request journal articles.

Interlibrary Loan
Requests for books not found at Columbia can be submitted online, and you can monitor your requests online.  Click on the "Request It" link anywhere on LWEB to navigate to the ILL request form.  OR use the E-LINK feature from databases or catalogs (WorldCat, RLG Union Catalog), to go straight to an ILL form.
