FINDING ARTICLES IN SCHOLARLY JOURNALS
A scholarly article is usually published in an academic journal, and will usually include citations to other scholarly publications, and a bibliography of sources consulted by the author(s). Authors are usually specialists and scholars in their subject areas. Scholarly articles are directed at researchers and other specialists and may be longer and more thorough than those appearing in news and popular magazines.
Columbia Libraries subscribes to many journals published in Latin America, Spain, and Portugal, and journals about these world areas that are published elsewhere. CLIO, the online catalog, can tell you whether we subscribe to a journal, in paper or online, and the years and issues we hold, but it does not allow you to search for individual articles published within journals.
SEARCH for articles in our INDEXES, DATABASES, and E-JOURNAL collections.
Indexes and databases keep track of articles published within specific subject areas, and allow you to search in a variety of ways (by keyword, subject, author, within a specific journal, etc). E-Journal collections make the full-text of certain journals available online, and most allow you to search and/or browse for articles.

Tips for selecting databases and searching:
- Do you know the name of the database or index you need? Click on the DATABASES tab in the QUICK SEARCH feature on the front page of LWEB, and search for the database by name. OR click on the E-RESOURCES-->DATABASES links from the blue navigation bar toward the top of LWEB's front page.
- Browsing for a database? Go to E-Resources--> DATABASES. You can view alphabetical lists of databases, or see databases in specific subject areas. Each database listing has a "More Info" link for more details about a database's scope and coverage.
- What am I searching? Does the database cover only journals, or other kinds of publications? What years are covered? Are publications from Latin America and Spain included, or just U.S. sources? Most databases have information and lists of titles covered. Reviewing these questions will help you identify the most appropriate databases for your research topic.
- How am I searching? Searching a database can be very different than searching an Internet search engine!! Most databases are carefully constructed and many allow for powerful and sophisticated searches. Basic searching will work in many cases, but make sure you explore advanced search options. In many databases, advanced options will let you easily combine search terms, set date and/or language limits, and search for terms only in the title, author, abstract, etc.
- Full-text or Citations? A full-text database may allow you to search for a term anywhere it appears in the text of articles, and thus you may need to avoid overly general searches. If a database contains only the article title, author, and journal title, you will have to choose terms that are likely to come up in those areas. A very specific or specialized term may not yield any results. So make sure you understand what you are searching, and the best techniques for searches.
LOCATING copies of an article:
- Online: E-Journal collections will provide full-text in most cases. Other indexes and databases may also have full-text. Most databases will have an E-link option. This opens a new window and will provide links to full-text sources.
- Paper: E-link also provides a quick link to CLIO, where you can see if we have paper holdings of the journal you need. TIP: this search is often done using the journal’s ISSN number, or other control numbers. If nothing is found in CLIO, try re-doing the search manually, searching on the journal title instead.
- NOT at COLUMBIA? If there are no holdings of paper or access to online versions of the journal you need, request your article through Inter-Library Loan. E-link will usually provide a link to the ILL request form. Or use the REQUEST IT link found at the top of the Libraries' web pages.
