Finding Mathematics Literature

CLIO contains records for books and journal titles but not for articles. Once you have a citation for an article, search CLIO for the journal title. Then check the location and the holdings to see if the volume you need is available at Columbia. If you do not find the journal or volume you need in CLIO, ask a Reference Librarian if the article can be ordered for you. (Service available to Columbia students, faculty, and staff only.)

Useful Databases

MathSciNet: Published by the American Mathematical Society; Contains citations and abstracts for articles from 1940 to the present. Some full text.

Location of Web file: LWeb/Databases/Science and Technology/MathSciNet

Searching:

Full Search:

  • Search from 1 to 4 fields simultaneously.
  • Select the field to be searched and the term to be searched for.
  • Select from 14 possible fields. Such as:
Example:
Pinkham,H* in author field
"Castelnuovo" in title field
"Inventiones" in journal field

Returns any articles that contain all three of the specified elements, such as "A Castelnuovo bound for smooth surfaces", in Inventiones Mathemathicae. 83 (1986), written by Henry Pinkham

Basic Search:

  • Search a single field.
  • Select from 11 possiblefields to be searched and specify the term to be searched for.
Example:
"number theory" in MSC Primary field
Returns the section of the MSC that contains the term "number theory"
Click on the icon to retrieve a set of articles on that topic.
Example:
"Graduate Texts in Mathematics" in Series field
Returns a set of articles printed in the volumes of the series Graduate Texts in Mathematics

Search CML: Search the Combined Membership List.

The Combined Membership List (CML) includes the names and addresses of all persons who were members of the American Mathematical Society (AMS), Mathematical Association of America (MAA), Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM), American Mathematical Association of Two-Year Colleges (AMATYC), or the Association for Women in Mathematics (AWM) as of the last update.

Author: last name, first initial,*

  • Search the Author Index to be sure you have all the variations of an author's name.
  • Be sure to use the truncation symbol (*)
Example:
birman, j*
Returns a setof articles authored by J.Birman, Joan Birman, J.S. Birman, Joan S.Birman, J.L.Birman, or Joseph Birman such as "On transversally simple knots"
Select an author and View All Items By the Selected Author.

Journal: Enter a journal abbreviation, journal name, partial name, or an ISSN.

Example:
differential geometry
Returns a list of titles containing the words "differential geometry"such as: Differential Geometry---Dynamical Systems, Differential Geometry and its Applications, Journal of Differential Geometry
Select a journal; Click on "List Issues for this Journal "to browse the articles in each issue.

Mathematical Subject Classification: The Mathematics Subject Classification (MSC)is a system used to categorize items covered by Mathematical Reviews and Current Mathematical Publications. Enter a keyword or phrase or a 2-, 3-, or 5-digit classification number.

Example:
14-XX
Returns the section of the MSC that contains the classification 14-XX, or algebraic geometry, and sub-specialties in that class.
Click on the icon to retrieve a set of articles on algebraic geometry, such as "Basic algebraic geometry. Translated from the Russian"

Browsing:

  • Browse new books or issues of current journals, or view current articles in a particular classification.
  • View a list of books from the current issue of Current Mathematical Publications, or from the current issue of Mathematical Reviews.
  • Browse journals from Current Mathematical Publications. Select the journal title, volume, and issue to browse the table of contents.
  • Browse items in the current issue of Mathematical Reviews or Current Mathematical Publications which have been assigned a particular primary classification. Select the classification and the index (MR or CMP).

Current Index to Statistics: Indexes Statistics literature from 111 core journals, 1200 non-core journals and 11,000 books since 1975, citations only. Also contains citations from Statistical Theory and Methods Abstracts.

Location of Web Index: LWeb/Databases/Science and Technology/Current Index to Statistics.

Searching:

Complex Searches

  • Search up to 4 fields simultaneously using any combination of the fields.
  • Use single words or Boolean expressions as search terms.

Author: lastname, comma, space, firstname or initial. If a last name only is entered, it will be considered a truncation and will return citations by any author whose name begins with the letters entered.

Example:
Karatzas, Ioannis
Returns a set of citations to articles by Ioannis Karatzas
Example:
Levin
Returns a set of citations by Levin, Levine, Levinson, Levinton, etc.

Article/Book Title: Enter a single word or phrase exactly as it appears in the title.

Example:
neyman-pearson lemma
Returns a set of citations to articles containing that exact phrase in the title such as:"Neyman-Pearson lemma for fuzzy hypotheses testing", by Taheri, S. M., and Behboodian, Javad
Example:
skorohod
Returns a set of citations to articles containing that word in the title, such as:"Skorohod's theorem and convergence of types" by Fazli, K. and Behboodian, J.

Journal/Proceedings Title: Enter a single word or phrase appearing in the journal title.
