Offsite Library Shelving Facility (ReCAP)
ReCAP is Columbia University Libraries' off-campus shelving facility. ReCAP is short for Research Collections and Preservation Consortium. Columbia University operates ReCAP jointly with Princeton University and New York Public Library.
CUL has accessioned nearly 3 million objects at ReCAP. On average 300,000 new accessions are sent every year. Offsite transfer allows CUL to accommodate new acquisitions, provide larger study spaces and better preserve historical collections.
ReCAP is a start-of-the-art high-density and environmentally-controlled facility. It is designed to house low-use material and provide efficient patron access.
- Most requests are filled within one business day.
- All patrons with a valid UNI and password may place requests.
- Use CLIO to request items from ReCAP.
- CU alumni may need to re-activate your UNI.
- If not affiliated with Columbia University, contact the Library Information Office at lio@columbia.edu or (212) 854-7309.
Physical Delivery
- Access to the physical text is possible for all offsite volumes.
- Most deliveries can be made to all campus libraries.
- Special collections may only be deliverable to the owning library within CUL.
Electronic Document Delivery (EDD) is provided for journal articles and single chapters of books.
- You can request an electronic copy of a journal article or book chapter. This service requires an e-mail address.
- A complete citation is required, including: start and end page numbers; article or chapter title; author; and Library call number.
- Place an EDD request via CLIO.
- You will receive a confirmation e-mail from the offsite storage facility. The message will include a web address and an assigned personal identification number (PIN). Use these to access the electronic copy of the material, which you may then print or download.
- The electronic document will remain at the web address for two weeks only.
- If your requested material cannot be scanned, then the physical item will be delivered to the Library and held on reserve for you for 10 days. CUL will contact you by email when the material is available for use.
