Services

The following services are available through the Oral History Research Office:

Workshops: Staff of the Office is available to conduct workshops for organizations seeking to initiate projects, train interviewers, or develop procedures. Workshops will take different formats and vary from introductory (one day) to intensive (several days) depending upon the needs of the organization. A small fee is charged for such services depending upon the scope of the workshop.

Bibliography: The Office maintains a library of works on oral history as well as up to date journals in the field. Copies of notable articles are also available.

Seminars: The Office gives an advanced graduate seminar in oral history method and theory through the Columbia University Department of History. The Director of the Office is the seminar leader. Registration can be effected through the Department of History or through the School of General Studies. The Office also conducts University seminars.

Networking: The Office has become a center for information on both the national and international oral history movements. Application forms for membership in the American Oral History Association and the International Oral History Association are available in the Office. The Office also has catalogs and indexes to the holdings of many other oral history programs.

Microfiche: Over 1200 of the Office's interviews are available for purchase in microform. Those available are listed in our catalog and in RLIN. The cost is $6.50 per sheet of microfiche, with a minimum order of $31.00.

Individual Consultation: Staff of the Office are available on a limited basis for individual consultation on various oral history projects. Columbia undergraduate and graduate students are encouraged to consult with the Office prior to starting projects. Consultation is not limited to the Columbia community.

Community outreach: The Office works with any number of local historical agencies, museums, community groups and schools on various projects. Such work includes but is not limited to training, workshops, grant assistance, funding information, and general support.
