Finding Materials:  Photographs

To locate photographs in collections, it is suggested that you search the Archival Collections Portal. Patrons can search across all repositories and collections held in the Columbia University Libraries. Recommended search terms: “photographs,” “historical photographs,” “images,” and “pictorial works.”

Some collections, as noted below, have particularly large pictorial components.

  • Community Service Society (MS# 0273)
  • Joseph Urban Papers (MS# 1279)
  • Brander Matthews Dramatic Museum (MS# 0253)
  • Paul Richard Palmer Collection (MS# 0968)
  • University Archives Historical Photograph Collection (UA# 0003)

The University Archives maintains a searchable image database that can be accessed on site. Among the subjects contained in the Historical Photograph Collection are Columbia University buildings and grounds, faculty, students, student life, and events.
