ReCAP Facility
A new permanent Shelving Facility was designed, built and is
operated as a joint project with New York Public Library and
Princeton University. The ReCAP (Research Collections and
Preservation Consortium) facility provides state of the
art high-density shelving that will house 7.5 million book
equivalents in Phase I of this project. During the initial three
years, items at the three interim Offsite
Library Shelving Facilities are being transferred to
ReCAP.
The ReCAP Shelving Facility will serve the need for growth space,
access, and good environmental conditions for the collections of
the Columbia University Libraries into the future. Phase 1 of the
new facility includes a processing center and the first three
shelving modules. During the initial three years of operation
Columbia plans accession of more than 2 million items. Future
phases will allow for up to fifteen modules by the end of the 21st
century. Each module will hold approximately 2.5 million
items.
ReCAP is located in Plainsboro, NJ, and provides a courier service
with next business day delivery of requested items to Columbia
Libraries, available at each of the individual libraries on campus.
Electronic Document Delivery is provided for journal articles and
single chapters of books. These are scanned and put on the internet
for a two week period. The email notification includes the internet
address and a private pin number for access to the material. By
special appointment, the Reading Room at ReCAP is available for
Columbia Library users.
