About the Collections

The Russian, Eurasian & East European collections at Columbia University Libraries contain, very roughly, about 750,000 volumes. This includes material in all fields of knowledge from and about the region of the former Soviet Union and its one-time communist satellites in Eastern Europe.

The collection is dispersed among the libraries in the Columbia University system. The large majority is in the Butler Library, with significant amounts in the Avery Library (Fine Arts & Architecture), the Lehman Social Sciences Library (Political Science, Sociology, &c.), the Arthur W. Diamond Law Library, and the Gabe M. Wiener Music & Arts Library, among others.

In addition to its substantial collection of books and journals, the Libraries provide access to a large number of electronic resources -- texts, databases, bibliographies -- for the study of Russia, Eurasia and Eastern Europe.

The position of Librarian for Russian, Eurasian and East European Studies is currently vacant.  For assistance, please email ref-area@columbia.edu.
