- A separate report was issued for each State, the District of Columbia, and
the U.S. Each report presents general statistics for establishments with
payroll, on number of establishments, sales, payroll, employment, and number
of proprietorships and partnerships, by varied retail classifications. All
statistics are presented for the State, MSAs, counties, and places with 2,500
inhabitants or more. Greater kind-of-business detail is shown for larger
areas. For each State, the District of Columbia, and the U.S. 1987 data are
provided by kind of business on sales and employees per establishment and
sales and payroll per employee. Comparative statistics showing percent changes
in sales and payroll between 1982 and 1987 are shown by kind of
business.

- Four separate reports were issued, each containing data for the States
located in the four different regions. Data are included by kind of business
on all establishments, establishments with payroll, and establishments without
payroll for the U.S. Also presented are statistics for establishment without
payroll on number of establishments and sales by varied retail clasifications
for each State and, within each State, for MSAs, counties, and places with
2,500 inhabitants or more.
