- A separate report was issued for each State, the District of Columbia, and
the U.S. Each report presents general statistics on number of establishments,
sales, payroll, employment, operating expenses, and inventories for all
establishments with payroll. At the State level, data also are presented
separately for the following types of wholesale operation: merchant
wholesalers; manufacturers' sales branches and offices; and agents,
brokers, and commission merchants. Less type-of-operation detail is shown
below the State level. For States, MSA's, and counties and places with 200
wholesale establishments or more, statistics are presented by kind of
business. Greater kind-of-business detail is shown for larger areas. In
addition, data are show for all places with 2,500 inhabitants or more and all
counties (with no kind-of-business detail). For each State, the District of
Columbia, and the U.S., 1982 data are provided on sales and employees per
establishment, sales and payroll per employee, payroll as a percent of
operating expenses, and operation expenses and end-of-year inventories as
percentages of sales. Comparative statistics showing percent changes in sales
and payroll between 1982 and 1987 are also shown by kind of business.
