University Librarian James G. Neal along with Dr. David Magier,
Director of Area Studies, and Jared Ingersoll, Librarian for
Russian, Eurasian and East European Studies, received Ambassador
Ataeva and Consul Aidogdyev at Butler Library.
The ambassador presented a new Turkmen book to the Columbia
Libraries by archeologist Wiktor Sarianidi, Murgash: Ancient
Oriental Kingdom in the Old Delta of the Murghab River
(2002).
"Sarianidi's work identifies archeological ruins in
Turkmenistan as evidence for a major ancient culture on the scale
of Egypt, China, Mesopotamia and India," said Ingersoll.
"This book is a welcome addition to the Turkmen language
collection at Columbia Libraries. We are looking forward to
expanding exchanges and other cooperation with libraries and
institutes in Turkmenistan."
As part of the Post-Soviet Nationalities Collection, Columbia
holds one of the largest collections of materials in the Turkmen
language in North America. The Turkmen language collection,
numbering over 1,200 volumes, contains works in all fields of
study, and is especially strong in poetry, studies of the Turkmen
language, history and archeology.
Area Studies is a Division of Columbia University Libraries

development in all subjects and languages on the following world
areas: Africa; Latin America; Middle East; Russia, Eurasia and
