See CJK in CLIO

NEW YORK, December 9, 2004 At the start of the fall semester 2004, you may have noticed Chinese, Japanese, and Korean (CJK) language clusters on CLIO records for our holdings. This is a service Voyager, our new integrated library system, has begun to develop. Here’s a sample CLIO display:

Author: Kawabata, Yasunari, 1899-1972.
Title: Yukiguni / [chosha Kawabata Yasunari].
Phys. Description: 349 p., [1] p. of plates : port. ; 18 cm.
Series: Kawabata Yasunari sensh¯u ; dai 3-kan
Publisher/Date: T¯oky¯o : Shinch¯osha, Sh¯owa 32 [1957]

Material Type: Book
Oral Script (alert):

Currently, the clusters are graphics only, and the software needs some debugging - there are occasional errors in reproducing character codes. But this should pass once the software begins to use Unicode to present non-roman alphabet languages. We hope to begin using Unicode in summer 2005.

In the meantime, you can find characters displayed as text, more accurately, in Eureka, the national database created and maintained by RLG. From LibraryWeb, click on Catalogs and follow the link for RLIN Eureka. Your search will lead to a record that has a line to click, Display Original Scripts. If your computer has the fonts to display the scripts, you will then see a record, with the original script as text, looking like this:

Author: Kawabata, Yasunari, 1899-1972.
Title: Yukiguni / [chosha Kawabata Yasunari].
Published: Tōkyō: Shinchōsha, Shōwa 32 [1957]
Physical Details: 349 p., [1] p. of plates : port. ; 18 cm.
Series: Kawabata Yasunari senshū ; dai 3-kan.

We hope to have such displays in our own CLIO soon.
